In Australia, 227,000 tonnes of clothing waste ends up in landfill every year. Most of this derives from fast fashion – clothing that follows quickly-changing trends so sales turnover is optimised. It is made cheaply, through poor factory working conditions, in the Global South.
We seek to raise awareness of this and challenge people’s complacency and complicity. Using processes derived from art therapy, improvisational theatre and visual art making, we create durational interactive activations where audiences come face-to-face with the waste. The project also seeks to redress the lost skill of hand making and repairing items.
Fast Fashun invites audiences to face their own contribution to this environmental and ethical crisis by presenting a real challenge: convert a literal tonne of op shop waste into wearable art, made for you, by you!
The project aims to bring together community, recognising that we are not alone in tackling issues contributing to climate crisis.
Participants interact with the waste alongside others, opening up discussions about the broader waste issue (and accompanying social issues) and contemplating their own behaviours and knowledge.
Fast Fashun received an acknowledgment from the 2021 Green Room Awards for Contemporary and Experimental Performance. The project was also a finalist in the Midsumma Australia Post Art Award in 2022.
Fast Fashun is available to be programmed within festivals and events. It can be tailored to suit different scale events and all age groups. Please get in contact for more information.
